Self-criticism is an act of pointing out one’s perceived flaws. It is the tendency to engage in negative self-evaluation that results in feelings of worthlessness, failure, and guilt when expectations are not met.
Self-critical individuals are always scrutinizing themselves and their performance in most areas of their life; it was originally seen as particularly relevant to the development of depression.
More common among those who have Perfectionism, those are deeply afraid of failure and rejection, feel a lot of guilt, and prioritize achievement over social connection; they have a hard time forming close relationships and also those who are goal/achievement oriented.
A high level of self-criticism can prevents individuals from taking risks, asserting opinions, or believing in their own abilities may be unhelpful or detrimental to well-being.
Self-criticism is sometimes positive, allowing us to foster personal growth. However, most of the time self-criticism is harmful: It can prevent the person from taking positive risks, being vocal about his opinions, and believing in themselves.
Self-criticism leads to experience fewer positive emotions and more negative emotions day-to-day.
