Mood swings are when one feels “up” one moment and “down” the next. Periods of elation can be followed by periods of feeling despair.
Unipolar mood swings are those that occur in only one direction - usually that of depression. Bipolar mood swings involve both highs and lows.
Bipolar mood swings generally last for days or weeks. Some individuals have what is called rapid cycling, but this is not common. Rapid cycling bipolar disorder is a term for individuals who have four or more mood swings within a year.
A person experiencing a bipolar disorder will have regular interruptions in his or her daily functioning (e.g. with family, job, peers and/or school) as a result of the combination of symptoms displayed.
