Treating Severe Depression

Treating Severe Depression
At its worst, depression is severe depression. Until it's so severe that months or even years of treatment are required, most people do nothing about it. Each year over 15 million people in America suffer from some form of depression. Unfortunately 2/3 of these people never seek medical treatments. Historic stereotypes of the wild eyed insane hermit wandering the streets motivate people to try to cover up their problem. The problem is that Severe Depression will not be whisked away. Those who suffer this disease have no control over it and the condition will only get worse with time.

Many people are too ashamed to admit they are afflicted. There is no reflection on you as a person because of severe depression. You're still a full person. Depression is a real medical condition. Medical aid is required. When depression reaches the severe level it simply means that all of the normal symptoms of the disease are magnified. The intensity kicks up many notches. Social situations and work become more difficult. You'll be pulled deeper into yourself by feelings of hopelessness. This illness cannot be prevented. However, it can be treated. Attacking it in its early stage is a key.

Diagnosis and treatment require an expert eye to notice the signs of depression. That's because depression has a lot of effects. The victim will begin to pull out of the world around them. They find it hard to deal with those around them. They cannot overcome their feelings of guilt, hopelessness and uselessness. They always seem angry and short tempered. In the severest of cases those suffering from this disease may feel that they hear voices or believe they have received visits from the devil. Severe depression sufferers often turn to suicide to stop their ordeal. Those affected by this illness need the support of those around them and treatment that will give them confidence once again.

Severe depression is terrible. Normal life is no longer possible. Losing the ability to control your own life is terrible. Treatment is the only option. Typically, anti-depressants and 'talk therapy' are prescribed to treat depression. Support groups can also help. The path to better living begins with the sufferer looking for help. They can once again gain the self-control they once had. But first the illness must be admitted and treatment sought.
