Adolescents have a notably higher susceptibility to experiencing depression in comparison to younger children, though the precise causes of this trend remain unclear. One possibility is that cases of depression during childhood often go unnoticed by adults.Another hypothesis is that the likelihood of diagnosable depression increases as adolescents develop advanced cognitive abilities and become more introspective. Alternatively, the elevated occurrence of stressful life events among teenagers compared to children might contribute to this phenomenon.
In a particular study, it was found that around 9% of students attending junior and senior high school displayed a degree of depression serious enough to warrant a diagnosis of major depression. This percentage closely resembles the prevalence of depression in adults.
