It is possible that biological factors cause the development of depression, whereas psychological factors maintain it. Because of the emotional bias so strongly associated with depression, psychological theories provide the basis for therapy and are profoundly influential in that regard.
There are two explanations derived from the major psychological perspective:
*Psychodynamics explanations
*Cognitive explanations
Psychodynamics explanations
The most traditional Freudian theoretical explanation conceptualize depression as resulting from the real or imagined loss of a valued or loved object, through death, separation, rejection or even symbolically though the loss of some ideal.
Cognitive explanations
In 1967, Beck produced theory of depression which stated: negative schemes and cognitive biases maintain the negative triad, a pessimistic view of the self, the world and the future. It has become one of the most influential of the psychological theories of the illness.
Psychology of depression
Depression commonly refers to a relatively transitory, negative mood experienced by human. The terms depression or depressed are used in both the ordinary, non-clinical sense and to refer specifically to pathology, especially when the mood of depression has reached a level of severity and/or duration that warrants a clinical diagnosis.
